My suggestion about the option key was because I thought Tony wanted to have one effect applied to / controlling several clips - for which you do need the option key. Having said that, the old lassoo method to highlight segments in Source/record mode followed by a double-click does apply multiple segment effects here (Mac, MC 6.0.3). I don't think Smart Tools affect it.
