But Steve, here's what I don't understand: what do the damn "Smart Tools" get us that we didn't have before? The two segment tools function the same, except that now you can have them both on at once, which I find incredibly annoying. Having only half the track height to work with is the sort of thing I just detest, because having less room to navigate means more errors. There's "ripple trim" which is of course just single roller trim. Then there's "overwrite trim," arguably the only unique value tool, which "lift" trims in filler. However, once upon a time we could fulfill the overwrite trim function by holding down the control key during trim operations. That feature vanished for a while (at least I stopped being able to get it to work), and now it's back again packaged as some fancy, icon specific trim mode. But it's not new functionality.
All the Smart Tools seem to be is existing Avid functionality delivered in less convenient, more annoying fashion. Perhaps the silly little tool bar is reassuring to editors used to doing things the hard way in FCP, but apart from that I can't see their value. And their arrival, plus the other "reforms" of the version 5 timeline has meant permanently broken navigation into the slip and slide trim modes, which used to be so bullet proof and easy. It still takes me so many tries to get into slip that half the time I gulp hard and use the counter-intuitive keyboard slip mode, which is a sign of real desperation. So long as I'm ranting, the abominable little FCP-like solo and mute buttons are also a major PITA, and I'm at a loss to see why they constitute progress either. The old, friendly, single monitor icon fulfilled both purposes, and was easier to aim for with the mouse cursor.
Oh Avid, why?

Tony -
I'm glad the smart tools tip worked. I know what you mean about SmartTools. I
too was "SmartTools-averse" but recently found a way to LIKE them:
Put the four smart tools on your keyboard. I placed them on ZXCV. Now, turning
them on and off and switching between them is very easy.
