Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Re: Editors, AE's picket, win union contract, benefits

As an international list, there are many here who don't have any interest in the contract negotiation of LA unions. Except as it relates to production flight to other locales.

(sorry, I tried to ignore it but with this many posts I had to see what the discussion was about....)

Thanks, for the promotion ;-) Do I get a raise now? ;-)

Putting on the therapist hat.... I think the reason these things spin out of control is that the issue has a lot of "baggage" associated with it. Union contracts are very hard to separate from general attitudes on the subject, based on personal political beliefs. So, it's hard to even start from a neutral POV. Second, many here on the list have had polarizing experiences with unions. In some cases, they've had a very positive impact on individuals and in others, members have been direct victims of the worst tactics of the unions. It becomes a touchy subject, no matter what.

In a much more practical sense, this is largely an LA (and to a much lesser extent NY) issue. If you are outside of these two centers, the MPEG is irrelevant. Mainly because you would never accrue enough qualifying hours to make it worthwhile to be a member . I know plenty of IATSE film production crew folks in Florida and they frequently work non-union, simply because there aren't enough union jobs available to them. This is in spite of the fact that the union threatens them with not being sent further union work for doing so. It's a bone of contention for them.

Although work conditions are a valid discussion point, just understand that arguing about things related to MPEG specifically have very little meaning to anyone outside of LA. Even there, only for the folks working on TV shows and films.
