I installed Lion by upgrading on an external firewire drive and it has worked fine but I haven't done any heavy lifting on it. So far my Symp Soft 6.x has worked okay with 10.6.8. Moving Pictures 64 bit will only work with Lion. Bill F. was nice enough to try and make it work on 10.6.8 but once he got it to show up in the Effects list I still couldn't get a picture in. At least he tried. So the only reason I had for Lion was Moving Pictures at this point. I have never clean installed going back to 10.5.x to 10.6.x. Perhaps I've been lucky but with Carbon Copy Clone it doesn't hurt to give the upgrade a shot first on a separate drive.
