Motion effects is simply one of those very weak aspects of Media Composers. I don't know that any amount of training is going to get you to where you want to be. FCP is much more capable in this particular area.
I personally don't know of a lot of solid training effects stuff on the high end. My guess is that your best bet would be the highest level of Avid's effect training classes. Maybe go directly to Future Media Concepts and whatever their advanced effects training is.
Another choice would be to use Boris RED, which is basically like After Effects as an Avid plugin, but requires a learning curve of its own. The other big choice for doing great motion effects stuff would be to get GenArts Sapphire.
But built in tool in MC? Pretty weak.

During a run of FCP jobs a few years ago, I got Kevin Monahan's 'Motion Graphics in FCP' book, and was able to get a lot out of it I could immediately put to work. Enough so that often I was able to build everything a show needed without sending anything out to After Effects.
