RE: [Avid-L2] Was Sony OLED now Color Correction question...

I can't answer for Terry, but in my experience, a monitor that displays
blacks correctly is MUCH faster to work with - and the resulting work
still looks correct on LCD and Plasma. I absolutely detest using LCD
displays for grading - though LED back light helps a little with that.

With LCD it's hard to tell if you're going too far, or not far enough.
Further, even if your scope says you're right, you're never entirely
confident the black is the way you want it. This is especially true if
you're discoloring the blacks intentionally, or more accurately
over-correcting the shadows to compensate for wrong white balance. For
example, you often have to add a lot of blue to the shadows of certain
cameras in certain lighting conditions to take out an overall color
cast. (This also happens with certain filters that are used for
'warming,' but any DP who's bothering to filter is awesome by default,
even if I don't always agree with his/her choices!) Anyway, with LCD,
you can easily end up with a blue (or other) cast that you don't really
want - then you run around the building looking at half a dozen
monitors... taking an average... and that's just no way to work. With
the OLED, I rarely feel the need to second guess my work (though I still
count on the scopes to confirm what I'm seeing.)

Sure, I suck, and I'm color blind... but with confidence!

>#1- It's the blacks!

Terry does the differences between LCD vs. OLED blacks transfer to a
variation on the final correction done on both types of monitors? In
other
words does the black level portion of a color correction session
depending
on the monitor used translate to the finished broadcast or projected
image?

I guess what I'm asking is does a CC session "black level wise" done on
an
OLED look any better or different than one done on a LCD? Once again
try to
leave out the colorimetry portion of the differences between
manufacturers.
Do you find you have an easier time achieving your desired result?
