RE: [Avid-L2] Re: EBU R128 as plugin?

Guys,

Please check out these guys from the UK. Very interesting application that is usable in a variety of ways and presets. The Mill and Smoke & Mirrors use it BTW. Not that this means anything but they have been suggesting features.

My understanding of the "Calm" standard is it eliminates the various dialogue norm values and sets it to a standard -24 for everything. Am I understanding this correctly?

I think they are pretty comparable methods, not not exactly equal.

Says http://gameaudionoise.blogspot.com/2012/02/whats-difference-between-lkfs-and-lufs.html :

The EBU were hoping that the ITU would drop LKFS and adopt the EBU's LUFS units, as Florian Camerer, the chair of the EBU's PLOUD group told me that the ITU spec doesn't follow standard naming conventions for units. However, they didn't, so we're stuck with both of them.

And the manual for LevelNorm (which does both ATSC A/85 and EBU R128) says:

> ITU BS.1770-2 measurement, including -10 LU 'background sound' gate 0
> LU = -23 LUFS Adjustment of the target level to 0 LU +/- 6 LU

However, different broadcasters may require different target levels, methinks.

And on this (Dutch) webpage there are two videos, the same spot, once at the 'old' european -9dBFS PPM standard, and once at the new EBU-R128 standard. It's easy to tell how this is a good thing. http://www.gvstudio.nl/r128-luidheidsnorm-m-i-v-1-september/

Lots of sound studios are now redoing old commercials to adhere to the new norm. Makes them money during the recession.
