If you upgrade a dongle to MC v6 and it is not a new system but an upgrade from 5.5 or earlier then yes the dongle will see MC 5.5 for example.
If you bought a new MC 6 license and have the new 16 digit activation scheme, then no you can not go back to MC 5.5 as MC 5.5 and earlier uses a 25 digit licensing scheme. If you buy a new MC 6 license and also opt to buy the dongle option to use instead of licensing you still can not go back as the dongle will be blasted to launch MC 6 only.
Hope this helps explain it all.......

If I'm running SNDX 4.0.5 now and get the upgrade to V6 but I also need to run V.5.5 for a while do I need to blast my dongle with the versioner first to get it to 5.5 and then blast using the flex versioner to get it to V6 or can I just blast to V6 and will it automatically work for all previous versions of SN? Also can you clarify if the versioner/flex versioner apply only to active support customers or does it apply to everyone who has updated regardless of whether they have support. I'm very thick headed when it comes to this. I'm going to call it Update Alzheimers. Every install I start from scratch especially between my ears.
