Shirley perhaps you are unaware of a little known deficiency with the 5D's sensor. The jarring nature of a slate clap actually reduces the life span of the chip. So those "In the Know" take every opportunity to avoid shooting the slate. ;-) There is a similar shortening of camera life expectancy when using the White Balance button.
