Yes, I used the Ampex Ace touchscreen freelance for one session around 1990. It was the same software but the keys were mapped to the screen instead of the custom keyboard. Since the screen has no 'spring action' your fingers get sore pretty quick.
As for mouse over keyboard, that's experience, not age. We push our interns, FCP or Avid users, to move to the keyboard as quickly as possible- its simply faster. even smoke, with it's intuitive 'gestural editing' is faster when keyboard and stylus are used in combination.
As one mixer I worked with a said, when they took away his console in favor of a mouse, 'don't cut off my fingers and call it progres.'. With a mouse you can do one thing at a time.
Like typing with a touchpad? While some things in editing are better when you can touch the image, most are not.
