But, did you do a sample rate conversion on the clips, or are you working
with mixed sample rates?
If so, try resampling all clips to 48K and see what happens then.
(and if this helps, turn off the option to have mixed sample rates, so
you'll know on forehand you will getting into trouble...)

Thanks for the suggestion. It now appears that the mp3-ness of the original
makes no difference. I tested a conversion to WAV, imported that file, and
still had the error.
