I've made a habit of doing that. Never know when a HD will fail or
something crazy (like this) might happen .
That being said, I was a daredevil and ran 10.7.2 with 5.53 for a time
before upgrading to MC 6 without any issues at all. You might want to try
it first, as going through the hassle of downgrading may actually introduce
problems you wouldn't have otherwise.
Usually software update asks for your admin password. Do you have one set?
