[Avid-L2] Re: Sony Z7U workflow advice

The M35 has no RS 422. With HDV 23.98, you are firewire control only, and it is pitiful in Avid land.

Therefore you'll need a deck that can play back these tapes - if the deck displays an error that the tape has the wrong format you have the wrong deck. I assume this "native progressive" thing is a marketing thing to sell more VTRs, but here are the fact is, that the following tape decks can't handle it: HVR-M10, HVR-M15, HVR-M25 and also the (expensive but great) HVR-1500
> With the Z7 camera Sony introduced the HVR-M35 which could handle native progressive and later they sold modified/upgraded versions of their old HDV tape decks which could candle "native progressive": HVR-M15A, HVR-M25A & HVR-1500A - you see, A stands for native progressive! ;-)

When going from offline to online just transcode your sequence to DNxHD (we used 120MBit) and you'll be fine.

If you want to capture SDI then do it at least with DNxHD120 and if needed transcode to DNxHD36 (or DV or 15:1s if you like it) for offline.

He is going to be sending me test tapes next week in the following formats to see what works best, 24p, 30p, 24i and 30i.

I know i really don't understand how the HDV format works, but is it all recorded at 30fps 1080 on the tape, regardless of what frame rate is shot? If someone could simply explain how HDV actually records these different frame rates, i would love it.

For the online i would preform an expert decompose, but what project would i be in for the final master? Would it be 1080i, 59.94? I have noticed that the only way to get a 1440x1080 raster is to be in a 1080i, 59.94 project in MC.
