With "Smart Decompose" I can select which source reels I want to decompose thereby skipping ones I don't want to decompose. I would like the same functionality with transcoding and consolidating.
Why?
I have a sequence with a mix of DNxHD resolutions, AMA XDCAm and ProRes, and mixed frame rates. This media is spread across multiple drives.
1: If I consolidate (to resolve AMA issues) skipping media already on the target drive, I am going to be consolidating media I may already have on other Avid drives, just not on the one I have selected as the target. By selecting just the reels to consolidate I can avoid that. Of course being able to select multiple target drives with the skip media already there option would be better, but probably harder to implement.
2: Working with ProRes in the timeline causes major lags on my system when doing simple things like changing track monitoring, stepping in and out of effects, rendering effects etc. I have several hour long ProRes clips that a few seconds worth of material is used from. If I choose transcode to resolve this issue, I am going to transcode every bit of media in the timeline that doesn't match the target resolution, even if that media is already DNxHD media of a different resolution. Being able to just select the ProRes sources in the transcode operation would be ideal.
3: Mixed frame rates. In a 1080 23.98 timeline, I have several sources that are SD 29.97 from original film transfers. Avid's smart motion effect is good, but in these cases I prefer to select film as the original source and remove the 2:3 pulldown and keep both fields as opposed to the blended option Avid adds automatically. This results in a clean 23.98 original. The problem is that transcoding in a 23.98 project will bake in the motion translation with the blended fields. Being able to selectively transcode sources means it would be easy to transcode those sources in a 29.97 project without having to convert the sequence then go back to the 23.98 project and I can then adjust the motion effects.
