RE: [Avid-L2] Re: Remote play the cable works

We had a Bittree 422 patch bay and I wired two of the jacks together using a
cross-over cable, similar I guess to the one that John built. That way, we
could use any patch cable, but we had to patch something like: avid- to
reverse patch top - then reverse patch bottom - to stand alone remote
control device.

You still had to make sure the Avid was in remote control and the serial
port configured to the correct device type. It took a bit to set up, but
once we did, it was real easy for one person to roll dubs from his or her
edit room while working in the central machine room.

Subject: [Avid-L2] Re: Remote play the cable works

So my cable works perfectly. I've included the old thread and the avid
page. Both say hook pins 2 to 8 and 3 to 7. Perhaps the confusion is that
you have to go both ways. For example 2 to 8 and 8 to 2, 3 to 7 and 7 to 3.
The addition in the Avid doc of pins 4 and 6 as commons seems strange. My
cable works going directly into the deck from the keyspan out of the avid.
I can play and stop a timeline from a dvw-500. If I go through our internal
RS422 patchbay and use my crossover cable it still works. Our internal
RS422 cabling only has 5 active pins 2,3,4,7&8. So clearly pin 6 isn't
necessary and I'm doubtful pin 4 is needed but no harm in following the
exact spec. I did try to reverse the audio patch cables that are part of
our RS422 patch panel but that didn't work for me. I'm guessing the
patchbay FF had was wired differently than ours so it facilitate the proper
cross over connections while ours doesn't by swapping the patch cords.
There is a lot of traps and you have to delete any active channels in the
deck configuration so there is no conflict with the serial port setting
which has to be active for remote play and capture work. The reverse is
true to. Once done with remote play you have to select none in the serial
port setting to be able to configure a deck.
As for the pinouts in the original thread I posted they are working for me.
I'm going to suggest there was other configuration issues that weren't
addressed when testing the home made cable. While it can be argued it takes
more time to wire it up than order it but really with the avid specs it took
.5 hours to wire. Learning how to properly configure the Avid took most of
the time and that would be the same with the store bought cable. I had no
need to plug into the deck RS422 out connection the regular serial control
in connector worked just fine. I was working on macs so I didn't have to
address any of the driver issues PC's may have. Perhaps someone who said
the pin outs were wrong owes me an OKI Dog. ;-) Just kidding the Palm
seems more appropriate.

If I read the following chart correctly then to build the necessary RS-422
cross over I hook pin 3 to pin7(TX+ to RC+) and pin 2 to pin 8(RC- to TX-)
Does this seem right?

DB-9 RS422 Pinouts

The TX and RC signals as well as the pin 1 ground follow the SMPTE standard.
Antona uses the added pins 5 and 9 for application of external power to our
adapters. The pinouts below are referenced as coming from our series
ANC-6000 adapter when it is configured for master operation.
DB9 FUNCTION IDENTIFICATION
1 GROUND ground for RS-422 and/or external power
2 RC- RS-422 minus side input
3 TX+ RS-422 plus side output
4 -not used-
5 GROUND ground for RS-422 and/or external power
6 -not used-
7 RC+ RS-422 plus side input
8 TX- RS-422 minus side output
9 +V Optional +5V to +12V DC @ 100ma

The pinouts below are referenced as coming from our series ANC-6000
adapter when it is configured for slave operation.
DB9 FUNCTION IDENTIFICATION
1 GROUND ground for RS-422 and/or external power
2 TX- RS-422 minus side output
3 RC+ RS-422 plus side input
4 -not used-
5 GROUND ground for RS-422 and/or external power
6 -not used-
7 TX+ RS-422 plus side output
