Excellent short answer and dead on.
Not to be underestimated is the importance of the hardware, not just the OS. The combination of OSX and the Intel Mac and Mac Pro was a one-two punch in the media business. Many facilities that run Linux, Windows and MacOS, run them all on Apple hardware. Many school systems are all iMacs and MacBooks, and most now dual boot Windows.
Unix is the dominant OS for enterprise level systems, especially systems that requires very high levels of customization (like feature films and scientific research).
