Not that I know of, though of course you can use the segment arrows. I think the only thing the FCP method gets you is a little less dragging, since you still have to click on the dang thing to select it.
I'll assume you're familiar with the Avid segment arrows, the distinction between red and yellow, and the various modifier keys that affect how they work.
