RE: [Avid-L2] Re: Avid Event in Burbank

Isn't the raster size a function of the software, not the hardware? For example, my MCSoft works in 1080p etc but i have no hardware attached. Compressing or decompressing frames happens in the RAM doesn't it? I know DX accelerates this process for DNx media but if vers 6 is 64bit and you can throw 32GB of ram at it...? I don't know but i'd like to...

Regarding this vague reference to "Raster Independence" -- and the implied support for third party hardware in the future ...

It would seem that Avid's current versions of DX hardware (Nitris & Mojo) will probably be require a "refresh" to even be competitive with the capabilities of the current crop of third party hardware providers.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but while the Nitris DX is dual link capable (but not 3G) -- I have never heard mention of resolution support for anything over 1080p. I understand there is a FPGA in the mix -- but I am unaware if this is dedicated to internal "processing" -- or to I/O.

And, the Mojo DX, at its outrageous price point, is not even dual link capable (and I sincerely doubt it is 3G capable) -- and it has even less processing power (or card slots) than the Nitris DX.

Unless there's something about these devices that I don't know, which is certainly very possible, it would seem that the release of Version 6 may very well herald in a chapter where Avid's hardware solutions are the lowest performing options available.

And where those of us who supported the company and who *recently* purchased those hardware products -- will find ourselves, once again, behind the eight ball and needing to buy new hardware -- whether it's Avid's or a third party.
