I've ben working exclusively on MC and Symphony for the last month after
having been FCP for the last few years. I was a lot happier, to say the
least.

There are some bugs and occasional crashes (why do I seem to be one of the
few who gets bus thread errors when trying to export?) but I like 5.5 a lot.
I think the smart tool is mostly effective when leaving off the splice
tools.
