[Avid-L2] Re: Editing on your feet

I've been cutting standing up for five years now. Every movie I do, I have the show either buy me or build me a stand-up console (two monitor bridges, one for the desk, the other for the monitors, also works well). I wouldn't cut any other way. I've put in as many 14-hour days as anyone. Maybe more, and never once, not once, have I ever felt fatigued as a result of standing. In fact, I have only ever felt more energized, more focussed, and more on the ball than before I stood.

As for the clients, it doesn't matter. You can always have the client monitor more eye level to chairs and/or sofa. Or get a stand that has an easy-to-move height adjustment. Those are great. As for the dominance/psychological issues, I've experienced none. In my experience, directors actually like bellying up to the bar and having a proper stand-up fight with the material. Anyway, it's your health, so if it works for you, let the others come to you, and feel better doing it.

Me personally, I can't sit anymore when I work. I just start to feel like too much of a slug. Good luck!

My $.02.

We have been talking about the physical health aspects of sitting for 10+ hours a day and most of the guys want to make a go of it as well, as long as I can survive it. Any recommendation other than the cinder blocks and padded mat I'm going to try? Also, have you had any issues with clients or coworkers and their reactions to the new stance. One of my guys brought up the theory that a sitting client may get subconscious body cues that could be intimidating rather than inviting. I would love to hear your take on it.
