Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Symphony owners?

Do you seriously see any big shift of new users to Avid other than converting

former Liquid users?

Certainly not, unless Avid gives new users a reason to chose them! Isn't that what competing is all about, providing something no one else does? As well as letting the world KNOW that you can provide something no one else can?

And right now, Avid still has the only passable capable color tool functioning within the NLE environment, at least on any platform my clients can afford to pay for. The work I did for years at my local PBS affiliate would not have been possible without Symphony; no other product had both the price point and the functionality. On the offline side, there is Script Sync, which any documentarian would kill for. I can gnash my teeth about the fact that Avid utterly failed to market this tool in the right places at the right time, but that's history now. If I were doing a long form doc, I would pay the damn $1000 for it, because I would make it back in increased productivity in a few months.

As to whether I "seriously" see any big user shift to Avid, I don't really know, but if not, it's not because of the product; it's because of Avid's consistent failure over the years to market strategically, and to innovate in a timely manner. It may be true that the window of opportunity is closed, but I can't be sure. If the company culture were to change, it's still conceivable that they could recapture at least some market share, because they still have something unique to offer.

Do you seriously see any big shift of new users to Avid other than converting

former Liquid users? I think international enterprise customers are a solid

growth market for Avid. In the US, Europe and Australia, all I see is selling to

existing customers. Granted, my view is pretty narrow, but if we are talking

about new users to video, then clearly the market is still FCP's with growing

interest in Premiere Pro.
