Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Facilis as server in workflow

I second that - the Facilis engineering staff is both knowledgeable and helpful. Even to their smaller clients....

When I worked at The Post Group I was looking for a storage solution that

could support every system we had, and deliver 4:4:4: to any that needed it.

We had Avid DS's , Avid Symphny Nitris's, FCP's , Clipsters, Prontos,

Nucoda's, and DRS's. TerraBlock was the only solution that would do this.

We ended up with 8 x 24D's for a total of 220TB's. All servers were

quad-ported to the SanBox 9000 switch. All clients were dual-ported to the

switch. We were able to have 15+ systems pulling 4:4:4 simo without a

hitch. Volumes were spanned across 4 servers. Much of the workflow was

DPX-based. Totally rocked!

Considering $/GB and potential throughput, it's a great product.

Also, Jim, Francis, and the entire engineering staff work very hard to

resolve issues and implement suggested feature requests.

Best regards,

Randy

Subject: [Avid-L2] OT: Facilis as server in workflow

Hey all,

We're an edit house that will be mixing Avid's and FCP on a Terrablock with

8 offline seats. We haven't upgraded to Terrablock 4.x but are looking to

do that shortly.

Currently, we use an XServe as our share point between graphics, sound,

offline, etc to transfer files for ingest into offline which are imported

and playback off of the Terrablock. We are now considering removing the

XServe from our workflow once we upgrade the Terrablock since we will have

greater read/write access and using the Terrablock as both the shared

offline media hub as well as the work server that passes materials between

departments.

Part of me is hesitant to bring the Terrablock into the workflow as anything

but a media server for edit stations but I think that just may be my own

paranoia.

Does anyone use a Terrablock as their main server/media hub? Are there any

issues I should be aware of before tearing down our traditional server from

the workflow and giving everyone access to the Terrablock? Do I need to

worry about slowdown or extra network chatter with more connections?

Thanks as always.

Scott
