I would like to mention that is one thing I think Composer and especially
Symphony does very well.
The ability to handle mixed frame rates and resolutions has come in very handy.
At the moment I cannot remember what they call that feature.
The trick is do all your digitizing, importing and transcoding in a project at
your source video's native frame rate and resolution. The exceptions could be
720p/60 which is often just a carrier for 720p/24 or situations where you may
choose to remove pulldown from interlaced sources when digitizing 60i material
into projects.
Then bring those bins into a project with the frame rate and resolution you want
to finish in.
It is also possible to bring finished 59.94i sequences into 23.98p projects and
vice versa. Composer will make a copy of that sequence a readjust the motion
adapters on the clips. However, when dealing with footage that has pulldown or
has had pulldown applied you may have to reset the cadence on a clip to clip
basis if you see stutter.
You should read up on it as there are some handy features like a refresh motion
adapters menu choice.
Symphony DX also gives you a wealth of cross convert, up convert and down
convert options in the video output tool. These hardware generated results far
surpass the quality of switching the project type in the main project window.
Just to say sometime nice for a change.
And yes the Alexa should do 23.98p, 24p, 59.94i and 30p when recording to SxS
cards.
Not sure if the slow motion features are working yet to SxS, but if your folks
record using other devices attached to Alexa for ArriRaw the should get rates
from 1 to 60fps.
We have not used to the camera to date, but are working towards the adoption of
it as our prime acquisition format.

Shouldn't you transcode in a 23.98 project and then bring those bins into a
59.94i project? It is the way we handle 24p material from RED and other sources.
Thought that was the way the new motion adjustment effects work. Not sure of any
implications if you are doing a conform back to ArriRaw material or if there is
a quality reason to avoid that sort of thing. In some cases I have had to go
back into edited sequences with 23.98 material in 59.94 projects (or during
cross converts) and adjust the pulldown cadence through the motion effect editor
to eliminate judder. Christopher Magid

did. I transcoded in a 59i project. This was just a test but they are shooting
with this camera soon. Can the Alexa only shoot 24??? Alan ----- Original

23/24p project and transcode, then open the transcoded files in a 59i project?
Or was that what you were already doing?
