Re: [Avid-L2] Re: AVC-Intra Workflow

Ok, so you now grasp the AMA stuff, with just one remark:
There is a huge difference between the average Avid and FCP editor.
The Avid people like to keep things safe, where the FCP editors think that
everything will always work as they think it shall / should, as after all
they've paid a whopping 1000 bucks and it comes from Apple, so it MUST be
good...
IOW. AMA is probably as reliable as the links FCP keeps, but over here that
is not good enough...

Back to QT.
Dunno about your 10 % figure, but FCP handles quite a few codecs...
(of course it sucks in some codecs, where PP or Edius excel...)
Afaik, it does not do text tracks or other funny stuff (I remember someone
writing a text editor or calculator in QT...).
It does do a lot of sound formats also, if QT compatible.
(Don't get me started on the BWF implementation...)

Funny thing, a Motion file is a simple data file that is QT compatible...
(And AMA sadly does not eat that, see the proof that QT is not the engine
behind it...)

Personally i hate to see QT go, as a lot of my income relies on it...
(as well as my workflows for editing customers..)

I wish it could handle more than 10% of QT files. In reality FCP only
handles QT files that are video files. That's about 10% of the (current and
soon to be gone) QT capability.

You can edit with L&T proxies and then media manage after editorial. I've
done that with RED material.

To be clear: I know AMA allows immediate editing but the recommendation from
Terry, and others, is to use AMA to make selects and transcode those to
DNxHD before editing. To me that's so close to L&T, where you make selects
and transcode before editing, that I'm just not seeing the difference - for
the recommended workflow.

To be further clear. I know that FCP/L&T doesn't allow any editing before
transcoding and AMA does, but people are recommending against that unless
it's a very short and quick turn job.
