As I said, I haven't deployed SSDs for my editing platform boot drives yet. But I can tell you that in the 8 machines that I've already done -- SSDs have had a very dramatic, and sometimes shocking effect on boot times, application launch times and file management processes.
I certainly can't vouch for the impact they'd have on the absolutely laborious process of launching Media Composer -- but for most other applications -- the effect is close to instantaneous compared to the former traditional hard drive performance.
As for paging file location -- I don't mess with it. SSDs are effectively RAM -- and it would be counterproductive to path that file to a traditional hard drive with slower access times and diminished bandwidth.
Generally speaking, you'll find that any disk intensive process will benefit from their use -- and you'll also quickly begin to despise the traditional hard drives in your system as being sluggish and pokey.
Of course, all of this is not without its cost. And it really requires full immersion into the technology -- so that you completely understand the cost/benefit -- and the limitations of this technology.
And finally, with a "legacy" application like Media Composer -- it will take a real hands-on test to see exactly what benefit can be derived from their use.
