R3D Transcoding performance - MC/SYM vs. MetaFuze
Testbed:
-HP Z800 Dual QuadCore at 2.8GHz, 6GB RAM
-internal 500GB 7200RPM SATA drive
-Nvidia Quadro FX4800 Graphics, 190.38 drivers
-Win7 64bit, Symphony v5.0, MetaFuze 2.1.1
-Nitris DX BOB
-74seconds R3D clip, 4K 16:9/23.98, build20 FW
-In 'Source settings' Debayer=High, ChromaDenoise=off,
OLPF=off

Notes:
MC/SYM
is marginally better in HalfGood qualityMetafuze
is marginally better in HalfPremium transcode but twice as fast in
Full.Unfortunately, there is currently no method of passing the edit/grade to Metafuze and use it as a
render engine for a finished cutLooking
at CPU usage, it appears MC/SYM does not use Hyperthreading when
transcoding at Full debayer quality, and is not able to use the main cores
at full potential(only 30% instead of theoretical 50% max). Optimization
badly needed herePure consolidation
of R3D footage is not possible, as there is no REDcode encoder for either
Mac or PC.Performance
dictates workflow:
-dailies HalfGood/HalfPremium
quality, both products can be used, MC has the edge of allowing fast, easy
viewing/logging of R3D footage(as opposed to a clunky/rudimentary Metafuze
interface)
-finishing could use Metafuze
transcoded footage(1:1MXF/High rate DNx) or just AMA link to R3D and transcode
at the end for playout to tape/export. First method will benefit from the MF
render speed(with the downside of transcoding full clips). Second method is
slower, but transcodes only the parts of clips used in the sequence.
