I don't suppose it's too hi-res if he wants to push right in and move
the image around in the video frame...

Have you checked the (I think it's called interpolation or scaling
method) selection? It needs to be on Gaussian(I think), rather than
the default. And then, as john suggests, rendered.

Sorry for being vague, but I'm not in front of the Avid.
