I reply:
I too have been thinking about this. The Octava and Gefen solutions
are both 'way too expensive for what you want. I've come to the
conclusion that just about any good home receiver equipped with Dolby
AC3 decoding capability would do the job quite nicely, will probably
cost less, and have more power for your speakers as well.
Additionally, many receivers have bass management circuitry, something
the other more expensive devices you listed lack. Finally, a good
receiver will provide you with volume control for your monitoring
system and can therefore become the center of your audio monitoring
gear.
I personally prefer Denon receivers. Here's one I think will meet
your needs:

You could even go cheaper by choosing this model with less speaker
power, fewer inputs and outputs (but enough for your requirements):

The prices quoted are MSLP. Though Denon does not usually discount,
you may get a slightly lower price from a dealer. No matter what,
Denon quality is high, IMHO.
