I don't think that's it. It's an intended design restriction by Sony in order for the unit to properly function as a VTR. There may be other things Sony is doing under the hood. I'm not saying it's a good idea, simply that's the way it is. Right now other apps (FCP, Premiere Pro, Episode, QuickTime) can read/write some XDCAM-codec media if you just need to exchange files.
