I considered this at one point - recalling, as Dennis noted, the
horrors when the old Macs would lose their mind and get the monitor
IDs flipped. One of the first things I checked was how my monitors
were connected (the left-hand "boot" is #1 and the right hand
"sidecar" is #2) which is, for me, normal. Everything else I run
(FCP, Color, Shake etc.) thinks this arrangement is fine and pretty
much goes with the flow.
MC? Not so much :(
Of course the specific "Bin Monitor" / "Edit Monitor" deal is from the
days of the Avid's board/hardware needing to drive whatever Mac
monitor displayed the Avid's primary full-motion video (leaving the
"Bin" monitor chores to the Mac's built-in display hardware). And
yeah - before these ATI and NVidia boards started taking on not only
the display chores but now a whole lot of the rendering maths, I would
have said there might still be some merit to the old school dedicated
"Edit" / "Bin" monitor assignment.
But I would have thought that - especially in this "post Meridien" era
- with both channels of modern video boards being essentially
identical that no longer would there be a need to have the S/R pane on
the "Edit" monitor - and in fact both the S/R pane *and* the CC pane
seems perfectly happy on the "Bin" (boot) monitor... at least until I
switch to CC mode and then watch everything eventually run back over
to the "Edit" monitor.
And, of course, there's the fact that this "MCSoft" stuff is otherwise
quite happy running on a single-monitor laptop / desktop kit :)
I personally think (and I'm hoping Jeremy will jump in here) that it
might be related to some legacy "Avid-hardware-related" code that's
imposing this "Bin" / "Edit" deal. It's the only thing I'm coming up
with right now at least.
And understand that my fight isn't so much with the "Toolset" scheme
as it is with the "consistent inconsistency" of the thing (which seems
to increase exponentially when "Workspaces" and "Linked Settings" are
involved.
So for now I've temporarily given up and will just do my editing stuff
(because thankfully the ScriptSync window stays put). When it comes
time to get fancy and color correct and such I'll worry about it again
at that time.
But if anyone up in Tewks would like, I'll gladly do some screen
recording so you can play along at home. It's actually quite
"entertaining." :)
