Good to hear back and follow up.

I did some testing after this post. Yes, indeed a roundtrip through Avid without scaling (keeping 709 levels) does appear to be maintained back inside FCP. However, when I applied certain effects, they clipped at 16 and 235, as I expected. You wouldn't want that to be the case, as then this clip's peak level would be less than at 100 once back in FCP. So it reinforced my thoughts that scaling from RGB to 709 and then back to RGB would be preferable.

OK, maybe hyperbole. The point is that you should work within standards that are consistent with the internal structure of that media. If levels and gamma are supposed to be within a 709 range, then use that. Don't cheat it just because it's possible. That's when you get bitten by unforeseen circumstances. As in my clipping example above.

I've done various projects intended for film or at least theatrical digital projection. The reality is if you get that deal, there *should* be money to go back and do a proper trim pass from your HD master in a DI suite or in lab timing. If the reality is only film festivals and small digital screenings, odds are that the playback systems aren't set to any proper standard in the first place. I would suggest setting up a display environment with a high quality LCD plus a professional plasma and grade in a proper 709 environment (paying attention to scopes). You'll be happy with the results and this will translate just fine to Blu-ray and most types of digital screenings.

Hope you find it helpful. I would also suggest you go back through the blog for my posts about "American Hardcore", "The War Tapes", "Scare Zone" and "Encounters at the End of the World". "SZ" is a digital feature I edited and graded that was shot with two EX cameras. "Encounters" is the Werner Herzog doc (shot on XDCAM-HD) finished at Alphadogs. These posts might give you additional points of view.
