One of the more interesting projects I've posted is the video content for the Billy Graham Library. It's a series of special multi-media presentations in various display formats that relies on archival footage. The great news is that the BGEA has covered Rev. Graham's life for over 50 years in media - hence, a ton of source material. What they didn't produce themselves, they have acquired, so there's a fantastic mix of every conceivable format from the late 40s until now. This included feature films and network TV shows.

In this process, some of the most challenging footage was color TV from the 70s until the 90s. By about the mid-90s, it looked like the industry had collectively figured this "color thing" out. From the 90s forward, color content looked pretty good. Other footage that also looked outstanding was B&W VIDEO from the 60s that had been preserved on various high-quality formats in the interim. Essentially it went from Quad to DigiBeta without the typical detour through 3/4 or VHS in between (as is so common with archival footage). This content held up extremely well to upconversion.

So when we look at these old shows, the reality is that the image quality of the day was always poor. We never realized it at the time because, a) that's all we knew and b) we were watching on equally poor display monitors. Perceptually, it didn't look as bad to us then as it does today.
