Basic primer. When the powers that be went to the HD world, they thought it
would be nicely confusing to change our terminology. So now, if the format
is interlaced, denoted by the (i) after the frame size, then we count the
fields, not the frames.
If the frame size is progressive, followed by a (p), then you count the
frames.
So 1080P 29.97 is the exact same number of frames as 1080i 59.94.
(Of course we don't do this in SD which is why many folks are confused by
it)
1080i 59.94 is the most common delivery format in the us as it directly
translates down to SD at 29.97.
Some networks, such as ABC decided to back the 720P 60 (actually 59.94, but
who's counting?) They went this route because you actually get 60 full
frames per second as opposed to 30. There is an argument that 60 frames per
second of a lower resolution picture (720 lines vs. 1080 lines) is actually
equal to or higher quality than less frames of the higher resolution.
Despite where you fall on this argument, there is no denying that 60 FPS is
better than 30 FPS for high action content like sports.
Finally, 1080 23.98 is the best overall universal mastering format as you
deliver to film, PAL countries (25 FPS) or NTSC (29.97) countries without
gaining any artifacts. All features are mastered in this format.
Does that answer all the questions, or open up a bunch more?
