somewhere around 3.5... Any 3d-type effects will be screwed up when
you bring them forward, cuts and dissolves should be OK."
Apple is using both CPUs and GPUs to render everything on the fly.
Apple is demoing this function in iMovie 09 that does even simple 3D
FX in RT. In fact, you CAN'T render FX with iM. The sources go "thru"
the FX functions right to your display. (Even with 720p30 and 1080p30
H.264/AVC source files.)
While Apple has been public about Core-video with GPUs, multi-
threading (Grand Central), and 64-bits (SL) -- where is Avid on these
technologies. Does anyone know:
1) Assuming one has a quad-core system or a system with multiple quad-
core CPUs -- how multi-threaded is MC? At what version did MC support
more than 2-threads? (Years ago, MC used to spawn a second thread for
the software emulator for their old FX board. But, neither the
emulator or MC itself was multi-threaded. More than 2 CPUs did nothing
to increase performance.)
2) Most NVIDIA GPUs now decode HD H.264/AVC and MPEG-2. Does MC use
the GPU when one importing and convert to DNxHD? (Of course, this may
be a QT function.)
3) At what version did the GPU heavily become heavily used for FX?
(There's a big difference in effects between 5.x and 6.x, and again
somewhere around 3.5)
4) Since many new PCs are shipping with 64-bit OSes installed -- and
Snow runs much faster when run in 64-bit mode -- what is the status of
MC itself being written as a 64-bit application?
5) Or, even running under 64-bit OSes? (Assuming Windows 7 support
will arrive soon.)
