I think virtual AMA volumes work fine without consolidating. The only
point to note is that you will be editing with Sony/Panasonic's
acquisition codec. This can have performance and picture quality
ramifications on a long / deep timeline.

In those cases where it merits it, I would think that a Virtual AMA
volume, long rough cut, to Transcode workflow would be the best of all
worlds.

I think the usefulness and workflow with AMA is different depending on
the type of tapeless format you are working with. With XDCAM-HD (from
discs) you are more likely to work with the camera media itslef. With
XDCAM-EX or P2, in applications other than hard news, odds are you'd
copy to a virtual drive first and then access content folders from the
hard drive. In the case of the latter, AMA has got to work flawlessly
from the virtual folder without consolidating, otherwise it's pretty
pointless.
