The point of AMA is that it is a plugin architecture, so Apple/AJA/BMD
get to do the work if they want to; Avid shouldn't need to.
In order to edit in FCP you have to do the equivalent of what would be
called consolidating in Avid. You can't edit the file based material
from Sony or Panasonic file based cameras without re-wrapping for use in
FCP; you can with AMA.
It seems to me that with AMA you can start the selection process
immediately and choose to Transcode to DNx when it makes sense. The
equivalent workflow on FCP is to consolidate everything you shot and
then Media Manage the stuff you have selected to ProRez

Pushing MC one step closer to FCP methodology: Edit first, take the
transcode hit afterwards. Now if we can get ProRes via AMA too, we no
longer need to mind the gap.
(PS: Remember to make it work with AJA & BM codecs while you're at it.)
