[Avid-L2] Re: Smoke on Mac update

I disagree, but I have already posted that on the Avid Forums. And you and I both know that $15k is just a starting number for the software (or did I miss the fact that $15k is a turnkey system?). Gear, Autoscreet support (cha-ching!), and other finishing room "goo" will bring that to over $30k I would bet. And talent to run the box. That number tends to make one pause.

And there is also the bit of news floating around that this new McSmoke will only be available to those that have a current Smoke license. If that's the case, there are other options for current smoke shops to offer low cost Smoke finishing rather than spending $25k-$30k in this economy (plus the annual Autoscreet "cha-ching" support). If that's NOT the case, then Autoscreet just shafted their current install base by offering a much lower cost solution to competition. And, as Todd mentioned on the Avid forums, the FCP finishing issue is being discussed inside Avid. Now wouldn't THAT be interesting.

If it works for you, have at it. I certainly understand that as a finishing house, you need to cover your bases, but I just don't see it as such a momentous shift in our industry. Big picture says otherwise.
