it a source way out of phase vertically while it was in record. It is my belief it is the slewing of the scanner to relock while still in record that creates the irreconcilable tape error. With the deck forced to lock to ext Ref the deck is locking to stable house ref even when the input video turns to garbage. If in doubt check the record machine during the edit and see if the sync ref is ext or input video. If the later you are asking for trouble. I can't say my theory correct but I haven't punched a hole in a master for a long time and I space bar out all the time. Guess I just am that kind of daring guy. Next time it happens take note of your sync ref settings and let me know if you agree with my theory.
