Sometimes, for whatever reason, the client just doesn't want you putting their work on your site. I did a lot of freelance work for a small production company, and some of it was really nice stuff. (Who am I kidding -- it was ALL very nice stuff...) :-)
I've never asked permission to take samples of my work or put them on my site. In this particular case though, the gig was up before I had snatched any samples. So I called to ask if I could come by and pick up quicktimes of the pieces -- and I was told absolutely not. The owner just did not allow editors to take work out of the office -- not the freelancers, and not even the staff editors.
Cost me the chance to put some really hot stuff on my site, but they became good, regular clients so I had no choice but to respect their wishes.

Copyright laws vary from country to country. You also need to consider the terms of any NDA you might have been under when you worked on the show. Usually, a producer will be happy that you're proud of the work and want to show a clip or two on your site. JB
