We choose the Cinepak section which offered a 160GB HD AVI. Judging by the size it would seem it's a reasonably decent quality file. This is a public domain movie. The file VLC created was done in a few minutes so I find it hard to believe it transcoded 28 minutes of HD material that fast but what do I know.
From you post it sounds like Handbrake is a more user friendly front end to ffmpeg. I've seen there are some options for QUI interfaces that use ffmpeg.
