Re: [Avid-L2] Setting or Console Command to modify how Avid names mxf files so they are more readable?

Well, you can test it by having some mediafiles that have their tape name extant. Do the renamemediafiles trick on them and then drag them into a new project's bin and see what metadata gets populated in the bin columns.

I did read in one thread that Tape Name/Reel Name was lost when the rename command was used.  That might explain the EDL issue.  The reason this came up was a friend was taking an Avid Project into Resolve and in the media pool the mxf files had the typical Avid gibberish for clip names.  While some had a bit of recognizable characters many didn't.  The hope was the rename command before sending to Resolve might make the clip names more readable.

Checking if the header changes is an easy thing to do with 'any' HEX editor.

No clue if the original file name / MDB has 'any' connection / encrypted Tape name.

I do remember I had issues back in the days (20+ years ago.)

I also have no clue why file based management would be better than the Media Tool in Avid.

(Or, Media Mover, if obsolete, I could rewrite it.)

It works. As the original poster suggested; try it on a small set and see if there is any issue. I don't think there will be. The header remains untouched I think

Yeah, I vaguely remember something about that.  I was working for a system rental house and got a call from a client that had used it at the beginning of the project.  And then they got to the point in the project that they needed to make EDLs and stuff and none of the EDLs were asking for the tapes, or something like that.  It was a mess.  And I asked them if they had a copy of their media pre-rename, and of course they didn't.  And they also couldn't rebatch digitize.  They had to make hand EDLs from the burn-in.  [sad trombone].

They tired to make the argument that it was somehow our fault and that I needed to some how solve all this.  Like either I needed to redigitize all the footage and recut all the reels by eye frame match, or that I needed to hand make the EDLs.  My boss said 'sure, but it'll be at a service call hourly rate', and they were very unhappy about that.

Here's another description without any warnings:

Without any arguments, renames ALL files within Avid MediaFiles to more accurately reflect the project name and clip name.
