If I remember, Pan & Zoom has a bug or had a bug where the length of the file path played a part in whether or not the original source image could be linked. Check the path and file name for illegal characters, and check the path for how 'deep' it goes. An easy test would be to move the source image to your Desktop, and link from there. If the link sticks, your path was too 'deep' for the source images.

I had some issues with Avid Fx lately and Marianna helped me out turning off OpenCL helped the preview within the interface show up properly. That had more to do with the interface window and not Avid playback.
