You can only patch audio to a similarly formatted track in your timeline. If one isn't available, the default settings allow it to auto create when you cut it in.
There are two solutions:
1) Re-ingest your clip with multiple mono audio tracks,
2) when cut into the timeline convert the track to multiple mono tracks.
