I do remember Betacam studio decks needing a Sync source to time them with everything else on the switcher routing lines. Now the decks do have a Internal/External ref selector switch. I just remember the Beta TBC's not locking up properly without a ref. In live trucks we would have to repeatedly power up and down the BVW 40's to make them lockup properly the BVW's not so much. Most of my experience was with the BVW series.
