I tried this as well, along with creating new files per the specs below.

I'm thinking of doing fresh install, since I'm having other abnormal issues

such at Titles not saving, and JPEG's not exporting.

If the image is in a path with any special characters (other than alphanumeric), this can be problematic to import or linking operations. Easiest thing to try is to copy the image to your desktop, rename it image.psd, and try again. If it works, then something in the file path is not alphanumeric.

Otherwise, MC has been known not to be happy with images that are not RGB (8 or 16-bits), and also make sure it is 72dpi. Weird things can happen if those rules aren't followed.

I have 2018.12.10 on Mojave and linking a PSD with layers comes in as a flattened image. Importing allows me to choose the layer to be imported or import as a sequence of layers, as expected.
