Re: [Avid-L2] Audio Delivery Requirements with Channel Labeling?

I'm confused as well.  I didn't realize the SMPTE ST 377-4:2012 was for MXF.  Originally I thought these interleaved tracks were just for the IMF delivery and that the ProResHQ files would be more typical mono tracks.  Upon further digging into a later page in the delivery specs it appears they also want interleaved, is it correct to call them muxed?, tracks in ProResHQ file.  So now we have an aaf from protools and found the correct checkbox to create what Protools call multichannel export tracks.  The only remaining issue is that I'm told ProTools doesn't export 5.1 multichannel tracks in SMPTE order (L,R,C, Lfe, Ls, Rs) so I may have to create an audio mixdown of the 5.1 tracks from the mono stems.

I'm wondering if wav stems out of ProTools would be more reliable for these interleaved tracks because in googling I read that with AAFs the audio media is still mono tracks joined by metadata.  Does a wav polyphonic track have separate tracks under the hood that are joined by metadata or are they a homogenized track muxing the audio media?

All my past experience has been that the networks I've delivered to didn't want interleaved tracks which I think had something to do with how their media servers worked.

Here is a screen grab of ProTools export box:

Your original specs refer to SMPTE ST 377-4:2012. This is about MXF.
Now, for remapping Wave files from mono to poly / channel mapping, I'm currently working on that.
(And more, it can also correct / measure loudness, correct stems, omit Theatrical etc.)

(web page needs an update, but the demo is the latest (for now, I'll make updates all the time.)

I asked the protools mixer to give me an aaf with interleaved stereo and 5.1 tracks but when I import them they come in all mono tracks.  Also he said that ProTools can not make an interleaved 5.1 track to smpte order of (L,R,C,Lfe,Ls,Rs). What's up with this?  I googled and found that the media essence stays mono but metadata joins the tracks.  Ultimately the delivery want 5 Stereo track (1-5) and one 5.1 track (6).  I figured if the aaf came in that way it would go out that way.  My other option is to audio mixdown to interleaved tracks.  Perhaps I should just chuck out the whole aaf and just go for wav files as I assume they are immune to the Avid confusing, and perhaps proprietary, multichannel track metadata.

I don't really have an answer for you, but does the spec require a QuickTime file? Or is MXF a possibility?

I got the following delivery specs for audio.  I'm use to delivering mono stems that I label using the preset names available in QT 7 for (L,R,C,Lfe,Ls,Rs) Lt,Rt.  But this delivery spec wants stereo and 5.1 tracks.  I suppose I could turn the tracks into stereo and 5.1 in Avid before exporting a QT Ref or maybe even a same as source.  What I'm not sure of is the labeling requriements mentioned.  Where do you add the labels?  I guess I've been doing it in QT 7 as mentioned above but that only has certain name choices.  Any insight would be appreciated.
