SOLVED > Re: [Avid-L2] DAT AUDIO INJEST PROBLEMS via NITRIS DX / MC 2018.12.3

So this is an AVID Bug, too (MC 2018.12.3 / 2018.12.5)

So yes, you must set the:

dIN (Digital IN) when setting the DAT's reference to EXT SYNC, because there are two options: WORD or D-1.

Separate from this is the toggle switch on the front of the deck has 3 choices: VIDEO (you can feed VIDEO in, and as HD (while invented by Sony in 1982) was not widely used in the late 80s/early 90s, the VIDEO it is expecting is Standard Def NTSC or PAL.  The second selection is INTernal clock.  And the third is EXTernal, meaning you are feeding it sync via the rear "WORD CLOCK" BNC connector.

However, in the DIAL menu, you get to pick D1 (as these series of decks: PCM-7010, 7020, 7030, 7040, 7050) came out when the first digital video tape format came out, 1986's 4:2:2 D1 VTR) or WORD as the reference when the front panel's toggle is on EXTernal.

Now I was hearing the Avid capture in "E-to-E mode" and the sound was popping in and out constantly.  A clue was where I mentioned in my original post that while holding down the mouse on a pull-down menu in the CAPTURE window that the sound was perfect.  Tonight, I actually hit RECORD and during the capture the sound if fine.  It is only in E-to-E mode that the reference word clock must be sending weird info to the DAT audio deck.

Voila.

It's been a very long time (very very very long) since I ingested from a PCM-7030 or PCM-800.  But if I recall correctly they tended to be more difficult than the video decks.  For my digital video decks (DigiBeta, HDcam, SR, DVcam) we would usually just run them on sync on input and everything was fine.  Actually no need for a external house sync gen.  But audio was very different.  If I remember right we needed to use a house sync gen to feed both they sync on the PCM units and on the Avid to get them to record and output acutely, or we would get 'pops'.  And the menu settings on the PCM units were tricky too.  I don't remember what they were, but you should get a copy of the manual and look through them all.

By the way, what is your name?  It doesn't appear in your email.

Mark,
Thanks so much for your time.

The Word Clock is the first thing I connected when doing this, but your Video IN on a Nitris DX was a good clue.

Q: I believe the Nitris does not intake 1080p and only 1080i, yet the project is 1080p/29.97 fps.  The DAT tape was recorded in the field at 29.97 fps in DFTC.

Does anyone think that will make a difference with an audio-only ingest?  Or should I create a 1080i/29.97fps project and feed 1080i/29.97fps House Black into the Video IN of the Nitris DX; and Nitris' Word Clock to the Sony PCM-7050 DAT?
