Re: [Avid-L2] AMA is soooooo slooooowwwww, what am I doing wrong?

Hey John M., I found this…

So I've turned off AMA Managed Media.  I've been testing it for about an hour or so now and so far things are much better.  It might have helped if I had just deleted the AMA Management folder and it's subdirectories.  But I'll see how long the good times last.  But hopefully this project will be put away at the end of this week.

Tim, I know it's not the drives.  For lots of reasons.  A few being…

The camera masters a separated over 2 drives and both are getting hammered in the scan.

I have stress tested the drives a few times in various ways and the only time I have an issue is in MC.

A failing drive would exhibit performance issues under a variety of read or write conditions that would not be exclusive to one software and during only very specific conditions of that software.

We actually do have a second set of drives as backups of the camera masters that are being used by someone else doing some BTS cuts in PP.  We swapped drive sets last week and I am having the issue regardless of which set of drives are attached.

I've tried different cables.

I've tried moving the Tbolt cables to a different buss on the Trashcan.

So far the only thing I've been able to do that made a difference is turn off AMA Managed Media.

I get this all the time on my 4K shows and they have under 20 clips.  The clips are stage performance of an hour or more.  It takes 5 to 10 mins to open the simple cuts and dissolve sequence.

It is also super slow moving around.

One thing I found curious when making DPX exports of the hour plus shows a sequence with Avid DNxHR HQX clips rendered to ProResHG Safe Color limit took like 6 hours to export DPX. When I relinked to Camera Original with nothing rendered, camera was Panny Varicam 35 AVC-Intra 10 bit the DPX export was more like 5 or less hours.  There were lots of BCC Pixel fix effects and resizes.  I was surprised the unrendered exported faster coming from camera original then the ProResHQ rendereed sequence.  Haven't heard back from Avid as to why this might be.

I agree I would never be able to work with the ama linked to camera original sequence.  Hence I work HQX and on occasion relink to camera original before DPX export.

Performance usually isn't as good as Avid media, but that sounds pretty extreme.  What version of MC?  Correct AMA plugin being used?

I don't know why this is still an issue..  Linking to media files isn't this mystical amazing achievement....it's literally the way every other NLE "imports" media.

Ok, I hear about people using AMA all the time. I'm trying to finish a low budget feature. For offline they AMA the camera masters and transcoded to DNx36. Did the edit. And I've relinked to the camera masters via AMA. Technically it all works just fine. But damn, to load up the final long play takes like ~7>8 min or more. And then once I can actually move around the timeline lord forbid that I have to switch out of MC for any reason, because when I come back it takes another 10min for MC to rescan the drives with the camera masters on them. This is brutal. I mean it's just near impossible to get anything done because it's like MC is regularly having to confirm that the camera masters are where they are supposed to be. I can't believe that anyone actually works like this during their editing process.

It's about 9TB of camera masters across 2 Tbolt drives.

Camera masters are HD from a C300.

This last scan has gone on for over 15min.

There are times it's literally faster for me to force quit and relaunch MC and reload the sequence and redo whatever I've lost.
