If turning off AMA media management has fixed it then a drive issue could be the cause.
With it on Avid will rescan the drive for AMA mountable media whenever the drive is re mounted. Sounds like a sensible approach for when you add a drive to a system.
But if the drive or OS sleeps and then wakes up, even for a fraction of a second, it will trigger a rescan. And this can repeat endlessly.
No other software or drive tester will bat an eye at a fraction drive dismount.
That said AMA management media databases never get cleared so a system can get bogged down in them so I regularly delete them and run with AMA media management off anyway.
