Update: I temporarily turned off all active Sophos processes and restarted MC with success. Perhaps a conflict with Sophos, but once MC launched properly without Sophos, I had success re-launching MC with Sophos running. Coincidence? Could be, but turning off the anti-virus software allowed the new version of MC to load for the first time since download. Thanks all.
